http://www.abettermanbloomed.com/?p=1466#comments Apparently bad luck with cars follows me around. That’s what everyone has been telling me. Anyway, here’s what happened.
I was headed to E. Lansing to run an errand. I was on US-127 Northbound and was planning to get off at Jolly Rd to take the back way into town. But I missed the exit because I wasn’t paying attention.
So there was a lot of traffic backed up, I think because of some construction. I was in the right lane which was backing up faster than the left. I slowed down and came to a stop. I was sitting there for a second, wishing I had got off at Jolly Rd. when I heard screeching tires. I looked over my left shoulder just in time to see a red Chevy Impala fishtail out of the left hand shoulder and slam head on into the rear drivers side door of my little blue Hyundai Accent.
The Impala spun around and when I looked up after the impact its back bumper was against my front bumper. The drivers of the two cars behind me got out and came to check on us. I hit my head pretty hard on the part where the seatbelt attaches to the frame of the car, but I was ok.
From what I gathered the red Impala was driving in the left hand lane, which had plenty of room in it, it was a much less backed up than the right hand lane. A silver Malibu few cars back from me decided to pull out from the right hand lane, without looking, into the left hand lane. The driver of the Impala slammed on his brakes and swerved to the left to avoid the Malibu and then, not wanting to fly into the median, jerked the wheel back, lost control, and slammed into–of all the cars sitting there– me.
The drivers side door doesn't open anymore. The car is "drivable" but I really don't want to.
I didn’t see anything but the part right before I got hit. But that seems to be the consensus from the witnesses that were there and the officers who responded when I called 911.
Honestly, thanks to my general hatred of my car and the fact that we’ve Dave Ramsey-ed our bank accounts and have a big emergency fund, I’m indifferent to the accident. I was lucky I didn’t get hurt and I wanted a new car anyway. So I actually found myself laughing quite a bit.
I don’t know the monetary value of the damage or what Progressive will give me, if anything, but we’ll be looking for a new car in the next couple of weeks.
Oh and I did get checked out at Redi Care just as a precaution because I did hit my head pretty hard, but the doc did all kinds of tests and said I was good to go.
